Más ciudades going wireless
Encontré esta noticia en la revista SiliconIndia (edición mayo. 2006) que me pareció interesante como un nuevo ejemplo de cómo ciudades tanto en países desarrollados como en naciones en vías de desarrollo (como INDIA) están enfrentando el problema de la falta de acceso masivo a INTERNET como algo que requiere un enfoque comunitario, una visión de ciudad. En Chile, lo único medianamente parecido que tenemos hasta ahora es en la ciudad de Salamanca por AtinaChile,Mercator y otros partners, aunque el tamaño claramente no es comparable: PUNE tiene sobre 4 millones de habitantes y Salamanca 24 mil, lo que en la práctica no permite ningún tipo de comparación, pero si de motivación: Nosotros deberíamos avanzar hacia soluciones similares para nuestras ciudades principales, incluyendo SANTIAGO.
Pune – Word’s first Wirefree City ?
In a major initiative towards making Pune the ‘world’s first wire-free city’ by 2007, the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) and Intel Technology India Pvt. Ltd. got together to announce their ‘Unwiring Pune’ dream project.
“PMC proposes to deliver easy, seamless Internet connectivity to its citizens, businesses and academic institutions across the 400 square km area of the city,” PMC Commissioner Nitin Kareer said. Intel is expected to submit a detailed technical study on the ‘Unwiring Pune Project’ in the next three months, he said, adding that the project would be implemented within one year after the technical report gets the necessary approval. Intel has suggested deploying WiMAX (worldwide interoperability for microwave access) and Wi-Fi (wireless fidelity) technologies to empower Pune with highspeed wireless Internet. Intel will also provide information and training to PMC functionaries in wireless technology.
Kareer said available data showed that Pune had the largest Internet-user base in the country, and connectivity indoors as well as on the roads was equally important for the city’s tech-savvy population.
Explaining the pricing, Kareer said, “The payment mechanism will be something similar to the recharge cards used by mobile phone service providers.”
